Thank God for abundantly blessing the 4th European CBF conference in Czech Republic and for the work of the Holy Spirit among our UBF second generations. I especially want to give special thanks to M. Hanna S. and congratulate her for her hard work in successfully preparing and directing this program in detail for the last 6 months. I also thank her for influentially serving the European ministry with many other missionaries of Central Europe and being a good example to many leaders in Europe.

At the 4th European CBF conference, I had the following strong impressions:
Firstly, there was growth. Compared to the Europe CBF Conference from last year, there was a great growth in both spiritual and human aspects. I saw the work of the Holy Spirit with many CBF children receiving the love of God and confessing Jesus as Savior. And I was surprised to see that they even made much progress in learning Korean. When I saw the lovely children professing their faith seriously, I could have a vision for second generation missionaries to be the actual heroes in the future of the European ministry. I earnestly pray that each second generation child may grow as a spiritual general who can nurture 10,000 disciples of Jesus.

Secondly, it was the work of mother missionaries who served the conference with full devotion and perfect co-working. I thank and praise God for mother missionaries who took care of the CBF kids with love and prayers, especially with Bible studies from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. every day, keeping an eye on them at all times. Seeing our missionaries’ co-working and devotion, I found that M. Hanna’s personal prayer and faith was more precious than diamonds. By her good example, I pray that all European co-workers may pray for a spiritual awakening locally and for all of Europe and pioneer 1,700 campuses and form a spiritual vessel together. May God bless the European UBF ministry to serve the work of sending out 100,000 missionaries and use Europe as a missionary sending continent again!

Thirdly, it was the work of the house church ministry in Europe UBF. As I saw growing CBF second generations, I could see the panorama of our house church ministry arising in Europe. It has already been 42 years since we came to Europe to preach the gospel to college students by God’s calling. Korea was one of the two poorest countries in the world, but God fulfilled his great work in Europe through the professional lay missionaries sent from Korea. Beginning with a small house church for campus ministry established in Germany in 1969, it has expanded to 45 European countries, like France, England, Switzerland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Greece, Romania, Macedonia, Croatia, and so on. Now it seems that we have two wings in the European campus ministry due to growing second generation missionaries who began to gain spiritual influence at the campuses. I pray that we may not only spiritually educate our second generations, but also actively serve European campus ministry through faithfully practicing group Bible study, 1:1 Bible studies, and writing and sharing testimonies in each mission field.

From now on we are going to have a European CBF conference in Central Europe every two years. I pray for Central Europe UBF to support the entire European house church ministry and continue to influentially serve European campus pioneering ministry. I also ask for God’s blessing on the next Central European UBF Bible conference to be held in Czech Republic in 2012. I pray that God may give M. Paul and Esther C. such great faith, spirit, and devotion as M. Hanna S. has showed so that they may form a more influential Christian community that is full of the words of God, prayer, mission, and love. Through this, I pray and am looking forward to the amazing work of the Holy Spirit which will lead many Germans to be raised as leaders in each country of Central Europe.

Lastly, I would like to ask for your prayer support for the upcoming YLC (Young Leaders’ Conference) to be held in Germany in Europe from July 29-August 3. God has answered Dr. John Jun’s and many other mission co-workers’ prayers and blessed our preparation for the European YLC thus far. In particular, I thank God for Dr. John Jun’s participation in the YLC. Furthermore, I thank God for our mission co-workers, Dr. Paul (Toledo UBF), L. Sarah (Chicago UBF), David (DuPage UBF), and Dr. Samuel G. (Ottawa UBF) who are going to attend this YLC and actively devote themselves to the work of empowering the next generation. And I also thank those who are coming from other continents, Dr. Luke from Africa, M. Joseph’s family from the Middle East, Dr. Elias and M. Paulo from Central America, and some more mission co-workers from the CIS, Asia, and Korea. On the first day of the conference, we are going to have a time of reviewing and appreciating the 50 years of UBF ministry and the spiritual heritage well presented during the missionary seminar from May 30-June 2 in Korea. I pray that God may raise young UBF leaders through the European YLC who can change this world.

In Christ,
Dr. Peter Chang

The 2011 German Leaders Conference was held in Wiesbaden from February 9th (Wed) to 12th (Sat). 62 missionaries and national leaders came together to share ministry reports and to build a vessel of prayer for the spiritual revival of Germany and Europe.

The conference title was “Spiritual Revival in Mizpa” based on 1 Sam 7:3. UBF chapters of Rhein-Main region – Wiesbaden, Mainz, Frankfurt and Darmstadt – hosted the conference together. The conference began on Wednesday evening by a string ensemble performance of 7 2nd generations from Mainz and Wiesbaden. It showed us the vision that a little spark of prayer in Germany would ignite a great fire of spiritual revival in Europe. Based on Philippians 3:13.14, Msn. Samuel Peter Ryu from Mainz UBF gave the greeting message with the title: “Pressing on toward the goal.” Msn. Augustine Kim from Wiesbaden gave a presentation introducing the UBF ministries in the Rhein-Main region. In the Rhein-Main region 26 missionaries and 24 second generations are co-working in 7 UBF chapters in 4 cities. He asked prayer support for pioneering 12 universities in the Rhein-Main region and for raising 1 ancestor of faith and 12 disciples of Jesus in each chapter. He also mentioned that the Rhein-Main region with around 200 Korean companies plays an important role for self-supporting of missionaries.

On the Thursday morning, the official program of the conference began by Dr. Peter Chang’s opening message based on Ezra 7:10. His main message was “Go back to God’s mission!” and “Go back to the Bible!” Europe is being rapidly secularized through humanism and materialism, and Islam is advancing mightily everywhere in Europe. Europe really needs UBF – Bible teachers with a broken shepherd heart. Through the impact of one man Ezra’s decision on the history of Israel, we learned that our significant decision of faith to live as a bible teacher for European people will bring about the spiritual revival in Germany and Europe.

After the message staff shepherds and missionaries from 14 chapters in Germany shared their ministry reports, New Year’s Key Verse, and prayer topics. We thank God for blessing our 1:1 Bible study and disciple making ministry last year and sending hopeful Bible students to Bible study and worship service. Last year, a new chapter, Darmstadt II, was pioneered by the house church of Msn. Joshua and Msn. Paulina Kim. Eleven next generation co-workers in Germany UBF decided to live as Jesus’ disciples. We also thank God for his mighty work among the “New Gens” in Germany and Europe through the European New Generation Global Leadership Forum. They could learn spiritual leadership and they are now building a vessel of the Holy Spirit through the Hope Explorer Bible Study every month.

On the afternoon there were some special reports. Shep. Stefan Elsholz reported about the European Directors Conference in Vienna, Msn. Petrus Chang about the European New Generation Global Leadership Forum, Msn. Hanna Ryu about the PR ministry, and Msn. Peter Lee about the discipleship ministry in Europe. Especially Peter Lee’s report encouraged all attendants greatly by showing that it is possible to pioneer all 1,700 campuses in Europe within 10 years.

After the special reports we studied 1 Samuel 7 in six groups. On the evening, Shep. Joachim Dietzel from Bonn UBF gave the 1st main lecture, “Spiritual Revival in Mizpa.” He stated that repentance is a prerequisite for a spiritual revival. He said that we have to cast out the idols of humanism, materialism, and hedonism from our hearts through daily repentance and serve the Lord only. This message clearly taught us that Germany needs Bible teachers like Samuel.

On the Friday morning after the group bible study on Philippians 2 Shep. Eberhard Groß from Cologne UBF delivered the 2nd main lecture „the humble attitude of Christ Jesus.” Jesus, being in very nature God, made himself nothing, and took the very nature of a servant, and became obedient to death on a cross. The message moved and encouraged our mission co-workers to learn Jesus’ humbleness and to build a holy vessel of co-working for German campus mission with one heart and mind.

In the afternoon, we had time to write testimonies deeply and share them in groups. Many co-workers shared their testimonies with tears of repentance. In the evening Msn. Hudson Kim from Mainz spoke about Revelations 2:4,5 with the title „Restore your first love“. He challenged us to restore the pure and genuine first love with a burning heart. Shep. Elke Dietzel from Bonn UBF, Msn. Wynelle Nett from Cologne UBF and Msn. Deborah You from Freiburg UBF shared their graceful testimonies. Their testimonies of tears moved and challenged many co-workers to decide by faith to serve the Lord only. There were some presentations on “self-supporting ministry“ and “co-working.“ Msn. Daniel Park from Dusseldorf UBF gave us a presentation on his brief life testimony and the lessons he learned through his professional life. Shep. Xenofon Grigoriadis of Bonn UBF also testified how he learned faith through the self supporting mission. Msn. Stephanus Park from Bonn UBF gave a special lecture about co-working and we learned the importance of co-working for winning the spiritual blessing.

On the Saturday morning, Msn. Markus Kum from Cologne UBF II gave a special lecture with the title „Spiritual Revival in Europe.“ He summarized the lecture of Dr. John Park from Kwang-Ju UBF II, which he gave on the European Directors’ Conference in Vienna this January. We were very encouraged to sacrifice ourselves for European mission learning that we are like the cows of Beth Shemesh who bring the word of God to Europe. After breakfast, Sh. Markus Abel from Heidelberg gave a message based on Philippians 1:9-14 “For the advancement of the gospel.” He encouraged us to live a life preaching the word of God in abundant love although we may be chained through our career and family, because God’s word is not chained.

Msn. Peter Oh, Hamburg and Kiel UBF-director delivered the closing message on John 21:15. In his final announcements Dr. Peter Chang emphasized that a repentance movement should come before a spiritual revival. He stressed that for a spiritual revival in Germany UBF-bible teachers are urgently needed. After the conference we had the chance to visit the Rhein-Main University at Wiesbaden together. On the campus we earnestly prayed for the raising up 1 Abraham and 1 Sarah of faith through the house church of Msn. Augustine Kim and Msn. Gideon Kim.

This 2011 German Leaders’ Conference in Wiesbaden can be summarized with one word: “Revival through repentance.” During the conference, we could see God’s great hope and vision for the spiritual revival of Germany and Europe, because the leaders humbly repented their sins before God and earnestly prayed for their personal restoration to imitate the attitude of Christ. The leaders repented their sins of idol-worship, lack of love, pride and unbelief and renewed their decision to live as an excellent Bible teacher, who can defend the Gospel against relativism, godless humanism and secularism. As the leaders repented with tears, the conference atmosphere became much brighter with lots of laughter and joyful faces. Also, it was very encouraging to see that Next Generation co-workers are actively participating in the ministry. Special reports given by some Next Generation co-workers clearly showed that they are growing as Bible teachers, who will serve the disciple making ministry as leaders in the near future.

As conclusion, we could see that God has already begun to revive Germany and Europe. May God ignite the fire of repentance among us and raise up 10,000 Bible teachers in Europe for pioneering 1700 Campuses. May God make Germany a Shepherd Nation and Europe a Missionary sending continent!

After the conference, God blessed our campus ministry in Austria UBF. God allowed me to get a job at a research company (AIT, Vienna) that will start from the middle of March. God is helping me to buy a new pension. God provided me prayer supporters for this pension through this conference. May God help and guide me through this pension purchase process.

Who we are: The University Bible Fellowship (UBF) is an international evangelical student church. We want to help students to experience the love of God, which he revealed to us through Jesus Christ and his word (the Bible). We invite you to study the Bible!

History: The work of UBF began 1961 in South Korea. Sarah Barry, an American Presbyterian missionary and Samuel Lee, a Korean pastor in Kwangju, began an evangelistic outreach to Korean university students because they knew about the difficulties following the Korean War. They decided to invite students to study the Bible. The students, who started to believe in Jesus Christ, established small group Bible studies and fellowship meetings in universities, first of all in Kwangju, then in the nearby provinces and finally countrywide. This movement soon became an independent Christian student movement.

What we believe: The basis of our faith is the Bible. We believe that the Bible is the word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit. The Bible represents the standard of faith and act to us. We affirm the Apostle’s Creed.

Activities:

- One-to-one Bible study or in groups by agreement.

- Sunday worship services in our churches.

- Bible meetings, journeys and international conferences, on which we are able to praise God and think together about the word of God.

RESTORE YOUR FIRST LOVE

Revelation 2:1-11

Key Verses: 2:4

“Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.”

Revelation looks difficult to understand. But today’s lesson is easy and clear to understand. Jesus tells us two things. First, restore your first love. Second, be faithful even to the point of death.

First, restore your first love (1-7)

Let’s read v1. Here seven stars and seven golden Lampstands represent seven churches in Asia. They represent also all churches of God.

Jesus speaks to the church of Ephesus. Ephesus was famous with the temple of Diana. Immoral sex. A center of commerce too. Here many evil things were practiced. The city was a stronghold of Satan. There Paul ministered for three years (Acts 19:1, 20:31).

What was Jesus doing? Jesus was holding the seven churches in his right hand. It means his perfect protection. In John 10:28-29 Jesus said. “No one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father who has given them to me, is greater than all.” I believe this Jesus is holding UBF Bonn and all the churches of God in his right hand too.

Jesus also was walking among the Lampstands. This shows Jesus is a good shepherd. He walks among his sheep. He knows and cares what they need immediately.

Let’s read V2-3. Now V6 too.

First of all, Jesus complimented their many good deeds. They worked very hard: Fishing and feeding sheep etc. They also persevered. To persevere means to overcome many hardships by faith. There were false teachers, but they discerned and kept pure doctrines. They did not compromise with worldly ideas. They endured all hardships and still have not grown weary. They looked pretty good in all ways.

Secondly, remember your first love. (4-7)

But Jesus did not stop there. Let’s read v4. Men look at only outward appearance. But God sees the inner hearts. The church of Ephesus looked good outwardly. But Jesus saw that they had forsaken their first love for God and for others.

What does it mean to forsake their first love for God? It was God who loved them first. He gave his one and only son. He forgave all their sins. When they believed this love of God, love began in their heart too. Their first love for God was burning. They wanted to do all God want them to do. To love God meant also to love others as themselves.

A good example of this first love is Jacob’s love of Rachel. Out of his burning love Jacob willingly volunteered to serve Laban 7 years, freely. Then another seven years, no problem, with free of charge. His service required hard work. Yet for Jacob 14 years were just like a few days! He was joyful, happy. Hard work was not so hard at all.

Paul is another example. He served God and God’s flock with the same burning love. He never forgot how wretched sinner he was. Out of love for God and for his sheep he traveled many places. He wrote many letters. When he had no more place to go in his old age, he did not stop there. He said in Romans 15:28 “after all… I will go to Spain too….” His love was still burning.

Therefore to forsake the first love means to do things with no love for God and for others.

This means, we may come all the meetings, writing and sharing testimonies well, going fishing and doing several one to ones, playing orchestra etc. Yet we may miss such willing spirit. No more sacrificial and volunteering spirit. Avoid hard work. Come late to the meetings. Feel burden and do all God’s work out of obligation. No joy in doing God’s work. No peace and no happiness in heart.

Here Jesus teaches each of us and our church. It is not enough that we look good, just work hard, persevere and keep UBF doctrine, but to love God with all our heart, soul and strength. Yes, it is more important to do with love for God and for others.

How then can we restore our first love for God and for others?

Look at V5a “Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.” Here three things Jesus suggested. Remember. Repent. And Do what you did at first.

When I tried to remember, my first love for God was like 100 Celsius degree. God’s love for campus students were boiling in my heart. I ran out to the campus and did many bible studies. I even became a missionary! Going alone even without my family almost 10 years! But after many years of UBF missionary life, I began to do many things out of obligation. I worked hard for my name’s sake. I used sheep to keep my one to one numbers. I persevered to reach our goal for the conference or Christmas worship number.

Could this make Jesus happy? Could this make sheep grow? Could this make me happy? No! No! No! One day I found I fell from high to low, very low, even below zero.

After remembering my fall, the next thing was to repent! At first instead of repenting, I wanted to complain about UBF hard life. I wanted to complain about Dr. Lee’s severe training. But Jesus helped me, no, no, “you should repent!.” So I began to repent. I confessed I worked hard with no love of God and others.

The next thing was to do the things I did first. After repenting, I returned to love one person through one to one Bible study. I did not care whether I may be rebuked by not bringing many sheep. I wanted to live before God saying I love you Father and I love your flock.

Then the joy and happiness returned to me. Willingness for God and volunteer to suffer for sheep filled my heart again. Like Jacob who worked 14 years with no charge and like a few day, that life returned to me again. That was beautiful. Soon God also sent many, last Christmas almost 80 came from my fellowship and 180 came from NEIU too.

But if we do not repent, what will happen? Jesus says in v5b “If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.” It means there will be no more Ephesus church on earth.

But to those who repent what will be given? V7b says “To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.” God will give eternal life in the kingdom of God. We will not only be fruitful on earth but will go to enjoy paradise with eternal life too.

Second, be faithful to the point of death (7-12)

Look at V8. Here Jesus introduces his faithful character. He is the first and the last. He kept his faithfulness to God even to the point of death. Then God raised him back.

Look at V9 “I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! I know the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.” Today we have world economic recession. Many become poor. But at that time the Christians lost all possessions just because of Jesus. Yet Jesus considered that they are rich in the kingdom of God. To lose for Jesus is to be rich in his kingdom.

Look at verse 10, “Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days.” Jesus foresaw the suffering they were supposed to have.

Policap was from Smyrna. He suffered but he did not surrender. The judge finally gave one more chance. If he just say that Caesar is the Lord, he will be released. But Policap answered, “I served my Lord last 86 years and he never denied me. How can I deny my Lord! Jesus is my Lord!” So he was burned to death. Jesus foretold that these kinds of persecutions would happen.

But Jesus challenged them. Let’s read V10 “Be faithful, even to the point of death!”

What does this faithfulness to the point of death mean? First of all, be faithful to a very small thing. If we are not faithful in a small thing, we cannot be faithful in great thing either. Dr. John Jun was very faithful in small things. Once he had one sheep, he served him faithfully all his life time. So much so that God charged the whole UBF work of God.

David was a shepherd boy. When a wild beast comes and takes his sheep, he ran after the beast, struck its mouth, and took the sheep out of their mouth. When the bear or lion tried to attack him, David did heading as well as punching its nose or eyes. In that way he was faithful to take care of even one sheep. That was why God charged the whole Israel.

Secondly, we must be faithful to the end. In UBF work of God you see how many young people come fascinated by God’s word and his world mission vision. They all want to give their whole life. They share great testimonies. But sooner or later one by one disappears and finally just a handful of people remains. Yes, it is not easy to be faithful even to the point of death.

By God’s grace I have been 43 years of world campus mission as a self supporting missionary since my college sophomore year. I have been up and down. Now Jesus wants me one thing. ‘To be faithful to the point of death!” He says “I gave you warming up last 40 years in UBF. Now is time to begin to serve God and his flock really.”

Actually we can say that UBF just began for the real world mission. We have 150 more nations to pioneer, and hundred and thousands of campuses in each country. UBF Bonn Germany worked hard but there are many campuses to pioneer from now as the prayer topics show. We must be faithful to the end, to the point of death.

To the point of death also means to continue even though it is so difficult to continue. Jacob served 14 years for Rachel. But we UBF must serve God joyfully and willingly and voluntarily for 40 years, 50 years, and to the end. Even though world campus mission by self supporting missionaries through one to one bible study are very difficult task to do. Yet it is worthwhile to die for this mission.

Then what Jesus will give? He will give us the crown of life. Not the crown of olives! The leaves wither, but Jesus would give us eternal crown.

Those who overcome and win the victory will not also taste second death. Look at v11. He had passed from death to life forever.

In today’s passage Jesus taught us two things “Restore the first love for God and be faithful even to the point of death.” In 2009 may God bless each of us to love God and others and be faithful to Jesus to the end.
