I will forever remember the Founders day of 2011. Missionary Paul Koh invited me, so I could visit America by God’s grace. I will report on my visit in three parts: 1) The Angels of LA; 2) The Founders Day Mission Report; 3) The Warriors of Faith and Soldiers of Christ in Chicago chapter.

Part I. The Angels of LA

After about a 10 hour flight, we arrived in LA, September 26, 2011. Missionary Isaac Kim served us with delicious food–and he asked us to pray for two prayer topics: 1) That God may help missionary Faith Park to live for 120 years; and 2) That God may help her sons, James and John to marry by faith. They are truly angels of faith in LA.

Missionary Faith Park is the angel of angels. Many people visited her to comfort her, but actually, they were comforted by her. We were no exception. When we stayed at the Park’s home, we were served by angels there including James Park, Faith Park, and their sons James Jr. and John. Daniel Yoon, the son of Missionary Susanna Yoon in Zimbabwe, also stays at this home. Cal Poly Pomona campus is located near their home. Sister Alex and Brothers Matthew and Greg are growing. The campus is very beautiful, and there are about 20,000 students.

We were also surprised by Missionaries David and Susanna Min. Recently, Missionary Susanna Min slipped while climbing a mountain and cracked her skull. By God’s grace, after successful surgery, she has been restored and is preaching the gospel.

Missionaries John and Susanna Choi also served us well. Missionary Petra is devoted to CBF. She also served Cham Nan and Lucia with Bible study and led them to Sunday Worship Service. About 40 house churches have been established there.

At Sunday Worship Service, one shepherd delivered a message entitled, ‘Jesus, The Good Shepherd’, and then Missionary Isaac Kim led a communion ceremony. The messengers in the LA chapter are shepherds Charles Wilson, Terry Lopez, William Larsen, and Jonathan Pyles. After the Worship Service, we visited Missionaries Abe and Suji Yoon at UC Davis. When we arrived in Sacramento by airplane, Sacramento Campus pioneers and UC Davis pioneers met us at the airport. The Sacramento pioneers are Missionaries Andrew and Esther Kim and their children Blessing, Esther, and Hanna, and UC Davis pioneers are Missionary John Jung, and Missionaries Abe and Suji Yoon and their son Elijah and there were also others at the airport to meet us. UC Davis campus is near the Sacramento campus and there are 30,000 students. Missionary Isaac Kim had three suggestions for Missionary Abe Yoon: 1) Be friendly with his advisor professor; 2) Come up with creative ideas; 3) He could get creative ideas through revelations from God.

Part II. Founders Day Mission Report

The Founders Day Celebration was held on October 7. The title was ‘ASIA, RIPE FOR HARVEST’. Chicago chapter’s co-workers, and visitors from America, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, and Korea attended. World Director Pastor Abraham Kim delivered a welcoming message. Through the message, he encouraged us to succeed in receiving the spiritual legacy passed down from Dr. Samuel Lee, and convey it to our descendants. Then, Korea Director Shepherd David Kim delivered the opening message entitled ‘THE SOWER AND THE REAPER’ from John4:27-38. Missionary Jimmy Lee delivered the pioneering history of Asia UBF, which God haddone for 25 years.

Fifteen years from now by 2025, about sixty percent of the world population will be in Asia. Now, the majority of the world population is in China which is about 1.3 billion people; India is about 1.2 billion people; and Indonesia has about 25 million people. Asian pioneering started when Missionary Angela Kim was hired by Samsung, and sent out to Hong Kong in 1986. Missionary Jimmy Lee reported in detail about God’s work in Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Philippine, China, North Korea, and so on. He indicated the Asia Mission Vision through the report title: ‘ASIA, RIPE FOR HARVEST’.

Shepherd Hayes Tang reported on Hong Kong Mission,and shared his life testimony. He became a born again Christian through one to one Bible study during his school days, and then he became an ancestor of faith in Hong Kong UBF. Missionary Angela Kim underwent brain surgery three times; so she took a lot of pills. One day she heard the voice of God. “…I am God Almighty; walk before me faithfully and be blameless (Gen 17:1)”. She threw all the pills and decided to trust in God.. And she declared a martyr’s faith before the Lord: “If you take my life, I will be buried in Hong Kong campus.” After that, she was healed miraculously. When she decided to live as a kernel of wheat, Hong Kong UBF experienced a great work of God. If kernels of wheat like Missionary Angela Kim are continuously raised up, Hong Kong UBF would transform China. And it would become a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.

Shepherdess Inang Pham reported on Indonesia Mission, and shared her life testimony. Due to her failure on the entrance exam of Medical College, she lived like she was paralyzed. But when she had one to one Bible study, she heard the voice of God “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” and she was transformed. She established a house church with short-term Missionary Tommy Pham who was from Washington UBF, and then she moved to Washington. She has the desire to live as a mother of prayer for students, and she is praying that she may be a source of blessing.

Shepherd Samuel Palaka reported on India Mission, and shared his life testimony. In the past, he experienced a number of troubles because of the discrimination in the Caste system. Through Bible study, he accepted a calling from God to be a royal priest. He established a house church, and serves as a professor shepherd in DU North.

Shepherd Abraham Terasaki reported on Japan Mission, and shared his life testimony. He delivered it in Japanese, and shepherd Kevin Albright translated it into English. Terasaki was a student in Korea University, and he was transformed through Bible study in Anam UBF. He can speak Korean language fluently, and he is translating a Korean version of the Daily Bread book into a Japanese version. He established a house church with a Korean missionary, and after 7 years of marriage life God provided him a cute daughter. In 2001, Japan UBF experienced a serious crisis and conflict. But, through the word from John 15:5, he decided to keep his faith and to remain in UBF. He could become an ancestor ofJapan UBF.

Lastly, Missionary M.K. reported on Chinese Mission, and shared his life testimony. When he arrived at China, he decided to live a campus-centered life. Even when he played with children, he went to the campus with them, played, prayed, and then went back to his home. God accepted his campus centered life as five loaves and two fish, and in the course of time hesent 40 sheep. One day, when they were in their worship service, the Public Security Police ran into the sanctuary. Missionary M.K. was deprived of his passport, and after 40 days, he was deported to Korea. But, Shepherdess M.L. succeeded the ministry and it is growing up continuously. She dreamed to live like Mother Barry, but she wants to get married. Although the Public Security Police drove away Missionary M.K., they couldn’t deprive him of his zeal for World Mission. He declared before God: “If Chinese government does not allow me to get in, I would bring Chinese students to Korea.” He has brought 10 Chinese shepherds to H center, and for training every year. He helped them to serve Chinese Worship Service. God transferred the Chinese Mission Center to Korea. Report from Missionary M.K. was very impressive, and it deeply inspired all the attendees.

Part III. Warriors of faith and soldiers of Christ in Chicago chapter

Missionary Paul Koh invited me to share my life testimony on Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. in the Chicago center. God blessed me to share my life testimony by the grace of God. I prepared my life testimony in three parts–Before Christ In Childhood; Shepherd Life in Jongno; and Pioneering Ministry in Ansung, Korea. In Los Angeles on Saturday at 3:00 p.m., after delivering my testimony, I lectured about discipleship-making. I had a great opportunity to have fellowship with the co-workers. Many missionaries recalled the pioneering ministry, and they agreed that we can achieve it only by prayer, and by God’s word. I also shared the same testimony in Sacramento, and the co-workers deeply accepted that prayer is absolutely necessary when it comes to serving the ministry. They made a decision to concentrate on more prayer. I sincerely pray that Missionary Abe Yoon, and every coworker would serve with sincere prayer, so that they may be granted God’s revelation, and they may be able to win the victory by faith.

When I stayed in Chicago, I visited the Loyola University campus, and viewed Lake Michigan by riding on a big boat from the Chicago River. I visited Northwestern University and Northeastern University campuses. I prayed for their growing ministries. Missionary Luke Yang from St. Louis came to the Founders Day Celebration, so I could have a graceful fellowship with him. He works hard, and studies hard and has prayed sincerely.

On Saturday at 11:00 a.m., I attended Dr. Samuel Lee’s Memorial worship service by his grave. About 100 people attended. Through this time, I deeply thanked Dr. Samuel Lee who showed so much love for me. God used him as a tool in the salvation ministry around the world; it was so miraculous. I met with his family. I had a conversation with Missionary Grace Koh(EunJun Lee) and I heard of the special love of Dr. Samuel Lee for me. She has kept her father’s Daily Bread notebooks as a heritage. Through viewing the testimonies he wrote, I could deeply learn from him again. He was a great servant of God and of prayer. He continuously prayed for me when he trained me. He was very awesome! We can go through the path of becoming a shepherd by someone’s awesome prayer. Missionary Augustine Sohn invited me to his home. He translated my life testimony. His co-worker Missionary Theresa corrected the English. Many missionaries invited us and served us very well.

On October 9, we attended the Sunday Worship Service. Pastor Ron Ward delivered his message from Matthew 12 entitled ‘Jesus, God’s chosen one’, and it was graceful. Christy Weed served a special music program with a graceful song. Pastor Ron Ward emphasized about prayer during the announcements. Yes, only by the power of awesome prayer, we can win the victory in this hard time in ministry. At 7:00 p.m., Shepherd Jonathan Reese served a special music program with a song before our testimony sharing, and I shared my life testimony after I sang a Korean hymn. After that, I sang another Korean hymn with my co-worker Maria. Shepherdess Sarah Kim shared herlife testimony, and reported God’s work in Yonhee UBFministry and 2^nd generation training. Many missionaries praised my life testimony. One missionary testified that it was so impressive and he cried during my testimony. Missionaries Joseph and Maria Ahn reminded me to become a doctor and master English as they have told me before; I promised to do so. I especially bowed to my spiritual mother Maria Ahn. I repaid debts of her love with just a bow and a word; but I couldn’t repay all. Missionary Maria Ahn is the ‘Amazon of faith’. There are so many great servants of God in Chicago; Mother Sarah Barry, Dr. John Jun, Missionaries Grace Lee, Maria Ahn, Abraham Kim, Augustine Sohn, Pauline Mun, and so on. Dr. John Jun and SunJi Jun spent hectic days to serve Korean missionaries who still hadweak faith.

Through these short visiting days, I could learn the God of America; he is so huge and great. I thought that like this great God, we have to grow up to be international shepherds, who can pray for the world and who can serve them. I often said the word ‘Let us grow up to be international shepherds, to someone who has a narrow heart and who need to grow. It is because the Bible is pleading with us to be perfect, as our heavenly Father is (Mt 5:48), and follow God’s example (Eph 5:1). America is so great. It can be described in two words; love and community. America is serving all the nations with love and community. Many people from around the world have come to live in America. The whole world is laid out before us in America. The God of America has used this huge country in his work through his love and training. He is restoring people from death in sin to life, and he is training them to be a holy nation. God loves his children with all his heart and he is a real blessing to those who call on him for help; however, Gods discipline is like training for all of us, and it helps prepare us to be warriors of faith even before death. Missionaries, who are warriors of faith and soldiers of Christ, are struggling to pioneer with much challenge. They are given the fullness of love and training from the great God. I know the only one work God is doing: He is considering, “Today, on whom shall I grant the blessing?”, “On whom shall I grant the blessing?” However, we are doing stuff that would be punished, not the kind of stuff that would be blessed. I pray that we would confess our past sins, and become the Lord’s angels, warriors of faith, and soldiers of Christ, so that we can do the kind of stuff that would be blessed, not the kind of stuff that would be punished. In 2011, I pray that I would become a faithful servant of God who serves the Lord and the servants of the Lord to the end with all my heart. I newly decided to love, to trust, to esteem, to respect people from 3-4 year old children to the elderly people who easily can be possessed by arrogance, self-righteousness, unwillingness, and stubbornness. Thanks to the Lord for his servants’ love for what I am. Thanks for your love for what I am. I deeply thank the shepherds and shepherdesses who have served us with love and prayer. Thank youand deeply appreciate you. I sincerely pray that I will serve the campuses in Ansung and I will pray for all the nations to the end.

Panel Discussion 101

“Bible Teachers as Global Leaders”
(Ezra 7:10)
Our God, in his sovereignty, has chosen us to be children of missionaries and through the work of the Holy Spirit, called us to be bible teachers.
Paul and the apostels taught the word of God and so were bible teachers. But also the ancestors of faith like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joshua and all the prophets and all the evangelists somehow taught the word of God and so also were bible teachers. The bible shows us in many ways that those bible teachers can be considered in our terms as global leaders of their times.
During the first night of our ENGL we could see through the life of Mother Sarah Barry that in fact bible teachers are global leaders. Hence tonight we want to have a discussion with the theme “Bible Teachers and Global Leaders” and think about the “identity” and “vision” we should have.
1. What is the identity of a bible teacher? And what the vision?
2. Why is this clear identity and vision so important for a 2nd gen missionary?
3. What are the characteristics of such a bible teacher?
4. What is a global leader, what are the qualities of such a person? And in which way can a bible teacher be seen as a global leader?
5. Which meaning has the spiritual heritage of the first Generation in UBF for those New Generations who live with the identity and vision as bible teachers and global leaders?
6. Who are examples living with the identity and vision as bible teachers and global leaders?
7. Do you live with the identity as a bible teacher called by God? Furthermore do you have the identity and vision to be used as a global leader serving this generation?
8. And why is it so important to live with this identity and vision?

„Global Leadership Network“

Networks and Communities emerge when the same identity and vision are shared. In other words, in order to grow in having an identity and a vision, networks and communities are necessary. Thus spiritual networks form a community, many communities build a society and when spiritual societies gather a whole spiritual nation will arise. By saying this, World Mission is fulfilled through spiritual networking.
The topic of tonights panel discussion is „Global Leadership Network“. As we think about this topic, let us pray to build a network as bible teachers and global leaders, by following Jesus’ world mission command and by taking hostship and stewardship in actively participating and serving world mission.

1. Why is it important to build networks for UBF 2nd Genernation Missionaries, who live with the identity and vision as bible teachers and global leaders? Why is it important to build spiritual networks?
2. What is the relation between these networks and Jesus’ World Mission Command?
3. Do you think that UBF 2nd Generation Missionaries can serve our ministry with stewardship, moreover churches and other mission organizations through building global leadership networks? If yes, than why? If no, than why not?
4. Talk about the benefits of building networks among UBF New Generations. Talk also about the disadvantages.

First, let us watch a short presentation about UBF Europe.

Yesterday, Pastor Yoo talked about the mighty work of God in Korea through discipleship training in SaRang Community Church and the great potential of those who are ready to go out as missionaries.

I would like to report about what God has been doing through sacrificial self-supporting lay missionaries around the world and especially in Europe. The ministry in Europe started 40 years ago with three nurse missionaries. Last year, 1,200 attended the European Summer Bible Conference in Germany. So, a fruitful disciple making ministry in Europe is possible. I hope and pray that through our brief presentations the character of this ministry may be revealed.

1. Following Jesus’ example of incarnation

Yesterday, Johann Lukasse talked about the basics of discipleship stressing the importance of a philosophy for the ministry above all strategies and methods. Let me read one verse from John 1:14: „The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.“ We may call this the philosophy: raising disciples by following Jesus’ example of incarnation.

Out of those who followed this example I would like to mention Sarah Barry, one of the two founders of UBF. She was an American missionary from the Southern Presbytarian Church. She came from a wealthy home and looked like a “Mississippi Princess”. At that time, in the early 1960s in Korea, Americans were regarded as superior and were expected to enjoy a privileged life even as a missionary. But she served Korean students with one-to-one Bible study, while living humbly in a Korean style coal-heated single rented room, sleeping on the floor with just a blanket – instead of living in the missionary compound with air-condition and Korean servants. She is now 81 years old and is still living humbly and serving college students with one-to-one Bible study. This humble life touched the hearts of young college students and moved them to seek Jesus earnestly. Later, many of them were following this example in living a humble life of imitating Jesus’ example of incarnation.

The missionaries who came to Europe, starting with those three women missionaries had the same philosophy, the same spirit. The life-giving spirit. The first German to atttend their conference was a young man with long hair, a green parka and red leather boots. He was served like a heavenly prince. He says he can never forget the serving of the missionaries. He became a humble servant himself and the father of four. His first son, Titus, is here with us.

As you can imagine, from a human point of view, it was impossible for Koreans to teach the Bible to European intellectuals and to help them to sacrifice themselves to Jesus. The missionaries faced disdain even from many Christians. However, they accepted God’s broken heart for the local students and by faith they were looking for a way to reach the lost and to obey Jesus’ command. They denied their own culture and studied the foreign language. They knelt down before God and thought of Jesus and overcame the cultural barrier and disdain and finally found a way to raise disciples by imitating Jesus’ grace iof ncarnation.

I was invited to Bible study in my 4th year of university. Before, I had rejeceted twice because they were foreigners. When I was asked again, the missionary who adressed me, could not even speak proper German, so I could hardly understand, what he was saying. I accepted his invitation because I felt pity for him. But on the way, as we dropped by my place and he sat down and prayed. I was moved. So I began to have a basic trust in the love and sincerety of the missionaries. When the pastor delivered the message on Romans 13 I could accept Jesus as the Lord in my heart and that was the turning point and the beginning of a new life. So what convinced me and helped me to learn from the missionaries was their sacrifical life-style. Because of this I was ready to accept admonition based on the word of God and discipleship training. Now I am working full time as a company lawyer, however I offer my heart and strength and time to make an effort to learn Jesus and to embrace one person to grow as a disciple of Jesus, not just me but other leaders who are working fulltime and are serving the ministry.

For both, missionaries and natives in the ministry, being self-supporting means working full-time and – at the same time – study and prepare Bible materials, taking care of the children, preparing the Sunday message etc. Through this they proclaim the Lord Jesus. Some of them share common life with some students who have spiritual desire and help them to grow as Jesus’ disciples. In order to do so they offer not just a part of their time, but also sacrifice their private life. In order to preach the gospel to students they are following the example of Jesus’ incarnation of self denial and sacrifice.

2. World Mission through self-supporting Missionaries

Self-supporting World mission is the fruit of the disciple making ministry. Currently, there are about 2,000 self-supporting lay missionaries in 90 countries. Self-supporting means financial independence. It means working to cover their own expenses. Sometimes it means to take over menial jobs. Some missionaries with a college degree were working as sewing machine operators or chicken killer. One missionary was a Lawyer in Korea, but he delivered newspapers in his mission field. Recently his ministry held a conference with 300 attendants, including 80 newly invited students.

One Missionary went to India as a dispatched employee of a large Korean company. He preached the gospel to many students and raised them as disciples. As he lived a devoted life by faith and prayer, he could also show an outstanding performance at his job. In this way he could prolong his contract for 3 times. As he was promoted to a manager position, he was asked to return to Korea. Going back to Korea meant a comfortable life with a secure future. However he left his job and decided to remain in India to serve the local students and leaders, who were growing as the fruits of the ministry. He opened his own business and currently he is the president of a company with many local employees. This ministry is a blessed ministry. The grace of Jesus is in this ministry. And just like him, his disciples were blessed, 5 of them becomking professors. This Missionary is an excellent example of a self-supporting missionary. He is a missionary first, then an employee or worker in his profession. Many of the disciples have Muslim or Hindu background. He raised up disciples of Jesus in a country where evangelizing Muslim or Hindu people is not allowed.

3. Disciple making through one-to-one Bible study

The strategy and method of raising disciples is one-to-one Bible study but this is not just a method, but rather the expression of an incarnated life-style. Because the missionaries imitated Jesus’ incarnated life-style their Bible study was very effective. One missionary in England studied the Bible with a very intellectual young man, who liked to discuss for hours and hours. The missionary learned to accept the pride of this young man. He overcame his own urge to answer back and continued to teach the Bible. The grace of Jesus worked in the heart of this young man. He now is a lecturer at a famous university in England, but most of all became a Bible teacher himself, practicing what he learned from the missionaries. When he met a proud lawyer, he embraced him and helped him, until he, too, grew as a disciple of Jesus.

Currently, we are experiencing a transfer of the spiritual leadership to native leaders. When native leaders accepted Jesus through the sacrificial life of the missionaries, they adopted the principles of the ministry: disciple making through one-to-one Bible study and World Mission through self-supporting lay missionaries. At the European Summer Bible Conference 2009, the main speakers were native leaders from Germany, France, England and Bulgaria, there were testimony speakers from Greece, Switzerland, Portugal, France, Czech Republic and Romania, all of them commiting their life to the ministry of disciple making. Also, a growing number of native leaders who accepted Jesus through UBF missionaries and received discipleship training were sent out as self-supporting missionaries like Evelyn from Mexico to Peru, Vladmir from Ukraine to Turkey, Oyor from Sudan to Egypt, Matthew from India to Portugal and more, around 30 in total.

Moreover, as we saw at the European Conference, the Second Generation now is growing as responsible stewards for the ministry. They do not identify themselves as „Missionary kids“ but rather as New Generation Missionaries. Among them, Titus Keller is leading an exemplary life as President of the New Generation in Europe. After the European Conference he initiated the „Hope Explorer Bible Study“. He will talk about that in a moment.

In conclusion, raising true disciples of Jesus in modern Europe is possible. It is possible through a sacrifical life following Jesus’ example of incartation. It is our prayer that Europe – like in the past – may become a missionary sending continent once again.

First. Thank God for the house church of M.Peter and Maria Guak whose devotion to God and the work of faith.

Though their pioneering work has not reached 10 years yet, there 3 sheep (Christian, Claubdia, Chen) are growing in as the main figures of Munchen UBF campus ministry through one to one Bible study and Sunday worship service as well. Currently they are having Exodus Bible study and actively inviting students to one to one Bible study. They are praying for thepioneering 12 colleges in the state of Bieren including Univ of Munchen.

Last month God provided a Sunday worship hall (40pyoung/1323,320 Square feet) near the center and now is the time of transition from home church ministry to disciple training ministry.

M. Maria Kwak has been taking pain relieve daily and co working with M.Peter Kwak to pioneer Univ of Munchen with her whole heart. Please pray for M. Maria Kwak to be healed and to serve God with her healthy body.

Second Gen. Peter jr and Ju Eun Kwak have grown well physically and spiritually and became good co workers with their parents and are making good spirtual envirenment for the pioneering ministry.

There M. Timotheous and Angela Lee are beautiful co working with them. They had raised a house church and bore their first son last year.(the son name is Talent).They are working for a branch of Korean company as an responsible director in Munchen and preparing to pioneer 12campuses in the State of Bieren.

I thank God that second Gen. missionary Johannes Chang is joining this precious work of faith.

He is living in a rented apartment about 200 meters away from the Munchen UBF. At the first night I rested at his apartment with him and the next day I had a Bible study with him from Genesis 26:1-6 and encouraged him to hold on to the promised word of God and blessed him to grow to be like Isaac who was an influential man of faith to all generation.

There are many young people who want to achieve their human dreams instead of devotion to God and of glory to God. so I encouraged him not to conform a tendency of this generation but to learn obedience to God like Isaac who lived with faith.

I earnestly pray that many second Gens. may love the word of God in their youth and become like great trees planted by the streams of water and which yields its fruit in season. May God raise many world scale spiritual leaders among UBF second Gens beyond a church , a society and a nation. In your prayer please remember M. Maria Suh to restore her health.
In Christ Dr. Peter Chang

The place we go fishing is good for making friends with students since it is close to a dorm, so we see the same students often. We are going to go fishing more frequently once my car arrives from the US. My wife Susie and Monica Chung also have made plans to go fishing together.

We were overjoyed when Alin (Biology), who I met just last Friday, came to GBS on Saturday and our Easter worship service. At first, I was reluctant to invite him because I noticed he had an earring. But I repented of my favoritism before God and asked him to come. He really has a good-soil heart.

I pray that my family will go fishing, co-work well with John Chung’s family, and raise disciples. Please continually pray for us.

When I left for Romania from Korea, Abraham Chung gave me God’s word from Matthew 24:45, “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time?” I was burdened as I listened to him because it felt like he was rebuking me for my laziness as a shepherd. But I accepted the word of God and decided to serve the work of God with my heart in Romania. Please pray for me to serve God as a wise servant.
