Rev. Dr. Sung-Sam Kang: “UBF possesses numerous outstanding characteristics”
By Rev. Dr. Sung-Sam Kang, Secretary-General of the Korea World Missions Association, Former director of Graduate School of World Mission at Chong Shin University
The 40-year history of the European UBF mission is indeed the miracle of the five loaves of bread and two fish. In orean world evangelism history, UBF is an exemplary model of successful self-supporting mission. It was achieved through professionalism and sacrificial devotion. Ever since three selfsupporting nurse missionaries were sent out to Germany in 1969, UBF was greatly blessed to send out about 1,500 professional selfsupporting lay believer missionaries to over 90 countries during the last 40 years. Behind this great blessing, there was a journey filled with tears, toil and faith. In 2006, UBF declared the holy vision to send out 100,000 self-supporting professional missionaries by 2041. This vision sounds simply amazing. It deeply touches my heart. I am very proud of that great vision. Thank you! Great work! UBF is the hope of Korea world mission. It is the model of a beautiful self-supporting lay mission. UBF missionaries certainly deserve more blessings from God than anybody else. This great blessing is the result of Mother Sarah Barry and Dr. Samuel Lee’s devoted leadership. As well, it is the fruit of current UBF General Director, Dr. John Jun and Korea UBF Director, Dr. Hyun-Jung Lee’s leadership and efforts to keep and inherit the UBF spirit and UBF know-how.
Personally, I had opportunities to visit UBF International Headquarters twice in Chicago, USA while I was studying at Trinity Divinity School (now Trinity International University) during my sabbatical years. Around that time, UBF was misunderstood and persecuted by some Americans. I actively defended UBF and made it very clear that UBF is a spiritual power station that raises faithful disciples and heavenly coworkers through 1:1 Bible studies. UBF possesses numerous outstanding characteristics. First, UBF is a global evangelistic organization originated from Korea. Second, UBF focuses on mission work through entirely self-supporting professional missionaries. Third, UBF is the master in terms of disciple-raising. Fourth, everyone in UBF humbly serves God’s Kingdom. Fifth, UBF deals with all kinds of misconceptions and persecutions with patience and faith. Sixth, UBF coworkers are all very sacrificial. Seventh, they have great vision. They have grand vision to send out 100,000 self-supporting professional lay missionaries by 2041. Eighth, UBF is community-oriented. Ninth, UBF achieves reproductive history through raising local disciples in mission fields and sending them out again to another mission fields. Tenth, UBF is an excellent model for self-supporting professional lay mission.
Once again, I congratulate you on the publication of ‘European Campus Mission 40 –Year History <Five Loaves of Bread & Two Fish> I strongly encourage every minister and every missionary to read it. Also, it is definitely a must-read for missionary candidates, especially self-supporting missionary candidates. I pray that God’s grace and truth may be with all the UBF coworkers and selfsupporting lay missionaries. Hallelujah!
