Rev. Dr. Chong-Soon Park: “UBF, a successful ministry of self-supporting evangelization for the last 40 years”

By Rev. Dr. Chong-Soon Park, The Korea World Mission Association President, Soongsil University Foundation President,Choongshin Church Senior Pastor

World mission is a response to the command of Jesus Christ. According to the Scripture, it is disobedience to not respond to this command. UBF has opened the door to self-supporting mission. UBF started out as a Bible reading meeting among university students and in the Bible, they found the world mission command of Jesus Christ. Missionaries Underwood and Appenzeller received and responded to God’s calling through Bible study.

I stand amazed at the fact that self-supporting ministry which began with the three nurses 40 years ago grew into a size of 1,500 selfsupporting lay missionaries in over 90 countries worldwide.

Paul was a great pioneer of self-supporting mission. Paul preached the gospel, traveling from Jerusalem to Illyricum and even across Asia. His vision was to reach Rome and Spain, which was considered the end of the earth that time. He started tent-making ministry. Selfsupporting mission means to endure all sorts of pains and sufferings. But its reward is a hundred or even a thousand times bigger.

I would like to congratulate UBF for successfully carrying out self-supporting ministries for the last 40 years. Korean Church already proclaimed its vision to send out 1,000,000 self-supporting missionaries till 2020 and 100,000 long-term missionaries till 2030. UBF also proclaimed its vision to send out 100,000 professional self-supporting missionaries. I certainly believe that UBF, being the frontier of self-supporting mission will accomplish this vision.
It is quite historical that Korea, which used be a non-evangelized country has sent over 20,000 missionaries preaching the gospel across the five oceans and the six continents. 40 years of UBF European campus mission is not an exception. Publishing 40 years of history of European campus mission has an important meaning in that it is not only to reflect back on the past history, but also to confirm our vision for the new beginning. My wish would be that
UBF and Korean churches may become faithful coworkers for world mission for the glory of God.

May God’s blessings be with all the mission coworkers who gave their best in Europe mission field for the last 40 years and with all those who worked for the publication of the 40-Year History of European Campus mission and also with all the coworkers in UBF. I sincerely congratulate you for the publication of the 40-Year History of European Campus Mission.
